Hike to Paulina Falls in the Winter for a Unique Experience

Once the roads into the high Cascades have been closed for the winter, there are more limited hiking opportunities for Central Oregonians. However, one favorite hike is close to La Pine state park and on the road to Newberry Crater. This is the Peter Skene Ogden trail which follows Paulina Creek all the way to Paulina Lake. Hikers can take the trail as far as they wish, although during winters with heavy snow, it can be challenging and snow shoes would be recommended.

November 2, 2024 was scheduled to be cloudy, but dry. The lower elevations of Peter Skene Ogden Trail had patchy snow, but it was easy walking.

Two and a quarter miles into the hike, the second large, "twin" waterfall is passed and then the hike steepens until the bridge is reached which crosses over Paulina Creek. Past the bridge the snow deepened and hikers without snowshoes had to post hole in soft snow to get any further.

The path also steepens past the bridge and there was more accumulated snow. Central Oregon typically doesn't get a lot of snow early November, but 2024 was different with the snow depth on Peter Skene Ogden Trail over a foot at Paulina Falls. With more snow falling and the trees covered in a snow blanket, it was truly a winter wonderland with no other hikers seen. The entire hike up and back was just under twelve miles and over 1500 feet of elevation gain.

Is Central Oregon Real Estate Moving to a Balanced Market?

In Q3 2024, the Bend Oregon Real Estate market and surrounding communities experienced a change, moving closer to a balanced market after many years of being a seller's market. The number of listings grew, days on market increased, but prices appear to have leveled off, at least within Bend and Redmond. In Bend, Redmond, Powell Butte and Black Butte Ranch, the number of sold homes increased as third quarter 2024 also saw mortgage interest rates drop. Outside of Redmond and Sunriver, all of the Central Oregon real estate markets saw an increase in new listings year over year, many above 20%. This can partly be attributed to sellers recognizing that with lower mortgage interest rates, the cost of their replacement property would be less and the delayed move they planned on taking could finally happen.

Central Oregon Market Trends 2nd Quarter 2024

The Central Oregon real estate 2024 market trends for most of the major urban areas continue to reflect a seller's market in 2nd quarter, although that has changed in La Pine where inventory levels at 7.4 months reflect a buyer's market; Powell Butte and Madras are in a balanced market at 6 months. Although still in a seller's market, inventory is at a level in Bend that hasn't been seen since July, 2015 when the average home price was $391,000 and mortgage interest rates were at 4%.* With more inventory, days on market have also ticked up, but well priced homes can still sell quickly and multiple offers can happen. BendRedmond and Sunriver are showing strong upward trends in all categories (the only exception for Bend is the number of homes sold) with home prices, listings, inventory levels and days on market all rising. As we move into 3rd quarter, we expect mortgage interest rates may drop, which could enable more home buyers to afford a Central Oregon home.

Newberry Crater National Monument is Hikeable Now

While waiting for the snow to melt from the higher elevations of the Cascade Mountains, people looking for a Central Oregon hike with mountain views can consider Newberry Crater National Monument. Besides the well-known Paulina Falls, Obsidian Trail, the hike to Paulina Peak, and the various treks around both Paulina and East Lake, there is the relatively little known hike starting at the Cinder Hill campground at the end of the road by East Lake up to the Crater Rim and then to the Cinder Hill viewpoint. Although not the longest hike, there is close to 1000 feet elevation gain over two miles and then the relatively easy 3/4 mile hike along the Crater Rim trail to the view point. The hike from the campground to the rim is not difficult due to multiple switch backs and a gradual incline. The trail is well maintained and at the rim hikers may have to compete with people on mountain bikes to reach the view point.

On June 15, 2024, the weather was cool with the temperature in the thirties at 9 am. The hike to the rim had some light snow as well as older snow patches left over from winter to traverse. At the view point, although very beautiful with views of East Lake, Paulina Peak and Paulina Lake, the wind was blowing and the wind chill was well below freezing. Hikers didn't last long admiring the setting.
